Great Backyard Bird Count

I saw 21 different species of birds during the Backyard Bird count. I saw the highest numbers of European starlings, House sparrows, House finches, American Goldfinches, Northern cardinals, and Mourning Doves.

The most unusual species I saw at least for my feeders/ yard were White-throated sparrows, American crow, and a Downy woodpecker.

Red-Tailed Hawk

While I didn't see this bird in my backyard, the pictures were too cool not to post. We went bird watching and while driving back through Murfreesboro, we saw this Red-tailed Hawk sitting on a power line. We took some pictures and watched him for awhile, when he suddenly swooped down to catch something in the grass. This bird was huge and one of my favorite hawk's.

Chipping Sparrow

This bird had me confused for quite some time. I finally realized that it is a chipping sparrow and they look slightly different in the winter than in the summer. This bird was so funny to watch. In the first picture, it was just trying to jump from the ground up to the first step, but with the snow it made it impossible. He tried for at least ten minutes.
They will come to feeders for suet or seeds, but in the summer eat mostly fruits and insects.
