Blog Revival

I am really missing bird watching and taking pictures of birds.  I am going to be trying to start posting here again at least once or twice a week about my birding adventures.  Stay tuned.

American Crow

Everyone has seen this bird in their yards whether you live in the country or city. I see them regularly on the hospital campus too. I just have never been able to get a picture of one in my yard until I was stuck at home with an ice storm.
Without further ado, the American crow.

Red-Bellied Woodpecker

This medium-sized woodpecker is quite a good looking bird. The male has a red head and nape, whereas the female only has a red nape with a brownish head. They will come to your feeders for sunflower chips, cracked corn, grape jelly, and suet amoung other things. I have found that they really like the trail mix bird seed in a tube feeder (as seen in above pictures.) This trail mix seed has sunflower seeds, dried fruits, raisins, and peanuts. (And probably some other things I am forgetting.)

This tube type feeder has been a big hit with the Downy woodpeckers as well. I have three that regularly visit the feeder. Other birds not of the woodpecker persuasion like to come to this feeder such as chickadees, titmouses, and cardinals.

Spring is here!

I always know when spring is here as the common grackles and cowbirds descend upon my feeders in droves. I have also noticed that the males are singing more and that the sparrows have taken over my bird houses and have quite elaborate nests already made. Although I am moving bird houses around, so he is going to be sadly disappointed.

The finches have begun to change colors from the drab olive gray color of their weinter plumage to the canary yellow color of their summer plumage. Right now they are just mottled up looking.
